COMPANY BACKGROUND: Founded in 1987, Future Group was an Indian conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It had a presence in the retail and fashion sectors, with popular supermarket chains like Big Bazaar and Food Bazaar and lifestyle stores like Brand Factory, Central, etc. Future Retail Limited and Future Lifestyle Fashions Limited, two operating companies of Future Group, were among the top retail companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange.

CHALLENGES BEFORE BIG BAZAAR: Since the inception of Big Bazaar, competition was stiff in the market; new challenges were emerging and Big Bazaar’s strategy of market penetration seemed to have gone wrong. There were a dozen complaints from customers against the company like poor product quality, high price, poor customer service, etc. Moreover, though the company had launched some unique initiatives like a shopping program called the Big Bazaar Exchange Offer, under which customers were invited to exchange household junk, and Shakti, India’s first credit card program tailored for housewives, Big Bazaar still found itself lagging behind the competition..

BIG BAZAAR’S TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS: Big Bazaar laid out a detailed process for the training and development of its employees (Refer to Figure I). It designed different training programs for employees at all levels and also designed a robust method of training delivery

ROAD AHEAD: The Training & Development programs were executed in a well-structured manner. The programs helped the employees to evolve and had a positive impact on the company’s productivity and profitability as a whole. It reinforced goodwill for the business, which led to higher customer satisfaction, lower costs, and faster growth for Big Bazaar..
